Researched and created with input from leaders in the graphic novel and Christian bookstore industries, Z Graphic Novels are top quality productions with a variety of themes and styles to meet the interests of readers of different ages. All the titles have been reviewed by theological experts offering a distinctly Christian perspective and “safe” alternative to mainstream manga. The serial nature of these novels spreads the stories over multiple volumes, not revealing in full the underlying truth of some of the stories until well into the series.

WHAT'S BEING SAID ABOUT Z GRAPHIC NOVELS

Ooomph! Pow!

"Zonderkidz jumps into one of publishing's hottest genres with its Z Graphic Novel line of Christian manga comics for middle-graders and young adults. This month will see the release of 12 titles - six separate series with two entries each. The company plans to roll out 48 titles in all over the next four years. Story lines cover a broad range of styles - biblical, superhero and fantasy/science fiction - and Zondervan maintains that all the books are theologically sound and family-friendly. Among the volumes on the list are: Manga Bible Volume 1: Names, Games and the Long Road Trip: Genesis-Exodus by Young Shin Lee, illus. by Jung Sun Hwang; and Tomo Volume 1: I Was an Eighth-Grade Ninja by Andrew Simmons and Rob Corely, illus. by Ariel Padilla."

What is a graphic novel?

A graphic novel is a book made up of words and pictures. In most graphic novels, pictures are arranged in sequential panels and words are shown in speech bubbles or text boxes. Graphic novels provide a style of storytelling, not a certain kind of story. Graphic novels can be used as a medium for sharing both fiction and non-fiction; fantasy and fact.

What is manga?

“Manga” is a Japanese term that translates as “comic.” Manga has huge fan bases in Japan and is soaring in popularity for audiences of all ages around the world. Instead of the color print on glossy paper associated with traditional comics, manga usually runs in a black and white style that highlights distinctive artwork and strong emotions. Manga is also distinguished by the ongoing nature of storylines that are then collected into the book form of graphic novels.

Why graphic novels?

Graphic novels are astoundingly popular with kids and young adults. They are great for increasing the reading comprehension and vocabulary of reluctant readers and fluent readers alike. Graphic novels also provide an approach to reading that reflects the multimedia nature of today’s hi-tech culture. Graphic novels integrate images and text to tell a different kind of story than would be possible with only a single medium: they’re a whole new way to read!

What’s so special about Z Graphic Novels?

Z Graphic Novels combine exceptional artwork and storylines with distinctly Christian perspectives and messages. The series collections provide a variety of themes and styles to meet the interests of readers of different ages and phases of spiritual growth. In an increasingly visual culture, Z Graphic Novels serve as gateways for readers to experience biblical messages in a current cultural context. Packed with action, adventure, and driven by their distinctive artwork, Zondervan’s graphic novel collections deliver biblically-based stories and contemporary fiction alike. Intricate plotlines and colorful characters deliver the newest way to connect to some of the oldest messages.
